5 Benefits of Buying a Modular Pumptrack

In this blog, courtesy of Europe’s Parkitect head office, we wanted to specifically discuss how modular pumptracks can positively impact your community.

1. You can take modular pumptracks to the people.

Modular pumptracks are portable, which means they are easy to share.

While we love pumptracks, the truth is many people still don’t know what they are. Innovating a way to make Parkitect pumptracks moveable was the solution to demonstrate all of the fun and excitement a pumptrack provides.

Special events and schools are great places to install a pumptrack. Students and riders of all ages have a blast as proven through the pictures and videos they share on their phones on Instagram, Facebook and other social platforms.

2. The prefabricated structure of a modular pumptrack reduces maintenance costs and associated liability.

Raise your hand if you’d like to own a house. Now, raise your hand if you’d like to pay for and perform all the maintenance that house requires. My guess is that the first option was far more popular than the second.

Investing in a public amenity is similar to purchasing a home. It’s important to consider all aspects; from the initial investment to the ongoing maintenance costs, to the liability when the amenity isn’t properly maintained.

That’s where modular pumptracks prevail. Unlike dirt tracks, modular pumptracks require significantly less maintenance.

Here are some of the reasons why:

The material used to create a modular pumptrack is harder than dirt (fibreglass, concrete or similar), which eliminates erosion concerns caused by riders and weather.

The design’s rigidness preserves the angles of jumps and landing area conditions, making the overall experience safer and reducing liability for the track’s owner.

If there is a damaged piece of track, it can be easily swapped out.

Mark Eller, communications director for the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA), observed that the stronger integrity of a modular pumptrack has led to an increase in their prevalence in bike parks:

“Prefabricated structures built offsite…are the new trend in urban bike park design. Their big advantage over dirt is that they retain their exact shape and riding quality with minimal maintenance over time.”

A blast to ride and a low-maintenance operation make modular pumptracks an innovative design sure to put smiles on everyone’s face.

3. They can be placed in areas that others cannot.

Modular pumptracks are a great active play option for unused spaces that won’t work for other applications like basketball courts, soccer fields or other public sports facilities. To encourage play and fitness, it’s important that amenities like pumptracks are located in convenient places, especially for kids. Thus, “close proximity” has been trending in sports ministry. Placing a modular pumptrack in a neighborhood park, for example, allows kids to go and ride independently without requiring their parents’ supervision, and leads to the greatest amount of usage.

Modular pumptracks can fit in tighter, narrower spaces and can be placed directly on concrete, like an old parking lot. This makes them an active recreation solution for challenging spaces, increasing the number of happy, healthy people in your community.

4. They are a proof of concept in advance of a permanent installation.

Sometimes modular pumptracks are used to test long-term feasibility. Cost, community buy-in, and the track’s footprint are all factors that might compel you to consider this type of “try before you buy” approach.

Let’s dig into these motivating factors. Asphalt tracks are great fun and highly durable, but are more expensive and take more time to plan and build. Modular pumptracks are cheaper and easier to install and remove. They also let communities and its officials test-drive the pumptrack to make sure they like it; it’s important to make sure the patronage, size, location and impact will work for locals and officials alike.

So if you’re considering building a permanent pumptrack but looking for a way to dip your toe in first, consider doing a trial-run with a modular pumptrack. You can even move it to test various locations and find the perfect spot.

5. Capability for resale with a high resale value.

Everyone loves a product that retains its value. The high-quality of Parkitect Modular Pumptracks mean they retain their value and can easily be resold.

Unlike stationary pumptracks, modular pumptracks can be resold. We’ve learned through our customers who have resold their modular pumptracks that it was easy to find a buyer and the pumptracks resold for a decent price. What does this look like in real life? It wouldn’t be uncommon for a pumptrack purchased for $30,000 to sell for $20k, or 60% of its original value, after two years.

From its flexibility to its safety and convenience, many communities are moving toward modular pumptracks to benefit their citizens. Are you ready to get on board?

Local Pumptrack Park’s Proving Popular!

It’s so fantastic to see Modular Pumptrack’s being enjoyed by all ages in local suburb’s across Australia.

Aussie kids are socialising and connecting with friends – face to face! While parent’s just love that their kids are having fun and being active – outside and near home.

Councils, Housing Developers and Landscape Architects understand that ‘being active through fun’ has enormous health and wellbeing benefits.

That’s why creating the perfect ‘local riding facility’ has become so important to get right.

The Modular Pumptrack is a proven solution which can be ridden by all ages, all abilities, in all seasons, on bikes AND scooters AND skateboards – creating contagious fun!

The precise geometry of pre-engineered Modular Pumptrack modules = guaranteed riding flow all year round.  And by integrating the precast concrete tracks into the landscape, the tracks are proving to be very pleasing on the eye, environmentally friendly and very user friendly.

New local ‘suburban’ precast concrete track locations are in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia, with more in the pipeline.

5 Reasons why pumptracks are contagiously good

Although it’s not a disease we are talking about, this phenomenon is spreading. Just like laughter can be infectious so can ‘pump riding’ on your favourite bike, scooter or skateboard.

So we’ve searched the globe looking for the Top 5 Reasons why people in towns, councils, municipalities, business owners, not-for-profit organisations and clubs are investing in this contagious riding activity originating from the Czech Republic in Europe.

#Reason1 – It’s healthy to have fun

Creating laughter, happiness and joy amongst riders of all ages can have enormous health benefits. Feeling good is directly linked with better health, longer life and greater well being in numerous scientific studies. Here’s a blog we recently enjoyed reading from Harvard Health Publishing which shares more about the happiness-health connection.

# Reason2 – Active kids concentrate better

Active kids are fitter, have stronger muscles and bones, concentrate better in class and are more confident, and these are just some of the many benefits physical activity provides.  In the latest 2018 Report Card on Physical Activity of Children and Young People, Active Healthy Kids Australia (AHKA) outlines why it is so important to provide kids of all ages and all abilities an opportunity to ‘move more’. Check the summary version here

# Reason3 – Connected people are good people

Big statement I know. From 5 Ways Social Connection Makes you Healthier, Jessica Stillman writes :  According to the latest science, those who feel connected to others “have higher self-esteem, are more empathic to others, more trusting and cooperative and, as a consequence, others are more open to trusting and cooperating with them.

We know that pump track riders enjoy being part of a community – a connection whether that is online or in their local town or neighbourhood. They share photos, stories and are really great at helping new riders – young and the not so young anymore. Pump track riders have proven to be a respectful and connected breed of people.

# Reason4 – Reduce the burden on the health care system

To help reduce the burden on Australia’s health care system, let’s provide more free local opportunities for people to easily enjoy good old fashioned fun activities like riding bikes and scooters safely – for example the installation of modular pumptrack parks in local suburbs – it’s that simple.  AKHA confirmed : We need immediate action in order to get our kids moving more everyday — they need to engage in activities that will get them ‘huffing and puffing’ as well as strengthening and developing their muscles and bones to ensure they are healthy heading into adulthood.

#Reason5 – Multi generational and cultural play benefits

  • 75% of children prefer outdoor play with parents or grandparents over video games

We especially love this one at Parkitect Australia HQ.  As Kent Callison wrote so perfectly in his article Multigenerational Play,  from toddlers to teenagers, to those in their twenties all the way up to grandparents, multigenerational play provides significant physical, emotional and social benefits.

And to add to this, regardless of riders cultural background, riding a modular pumptrack gives them something they have in common while they are having fun! We’ve seen this so many times now – it’s simply proven across the globe!

Here’s a few cool clips to show you just what we mean.

Skatepark vs Dirt vs Modular Pumptrack

Everyday at Parkitect Australia HQ we hear stories about the excessive unnecessary money being spent around Australia on skateparks and dirt pump tracks.

What’s the big deal you may say?

Well although we love seeing kids and adults being active, we don’t love seeing money not being used to its best ability. For us it’s about Australian communities getting the best bang for their ‘rate paying’ bucks!

While the ongoing problems of erosion and the ever changing riding geometry exist, dirt pump track’s also only serve those people who love riding bikes, they do nothing for the kids and adults who love their scooters, skateboards or blades.

We see it as a no brainer.  Throughout Europe where space is limited and at a premium, townships have been squeezing Modular Pumptrack’s into neighbourhoods over the past 10 years to encourage active healthy fun on all wheels, for all ages and all abilities. Australia has so many open areas and yet we provide very limited space (if any) for kids to simply ride their bikes, scooters, skateboards and blades safely, near their homes, off the streets.

Check out a bunch of YouTube links here from Europe

Our passion is to give local communities and neighbourhoods the opportunity to have fun, socialise and be active on their favourite choice of wheels in their local park where it is free and easy to get to and from their home.

You see Modular Pumptrack’s are easy to install, easy to move, adaptable to the existing park environment and can be beautifully blended into the landscape. Modular Pumptrack’s create laughter, they create happy parents, they encourage healthy socialisation and offer a place where all ages can simultaneously ride safely together – adults and kids alike.

The proof is in the pudding as they say. The steady increase in tracks popping up in  neighbourhoods and towns across Australia is encouraging. Communities are embracing the European concept and people are ‘getting it’. It’s simple good old fashioned healthy fun.

The value offering of a skatepark and a dirt pump track simply does not compare in any way to the value offering of a Modular Pumptrack. For councils and developers it’s worth checking this phenomenon out before investing in something they wish they hadn’t.

Happy, healthy Aussies of all ages and all abilities having fun on more wheels more often!

Most remote Modular Pumptrack in the world

You can imagine our surprise when we googled the ‘Australian township Laverton’ to find out that it’s claimed to be named after Dr Charles Laver who in 1900 arrived in the town on his bike!!

This was such a cool finding. You see here at Parkitect Australia HQ we were thick in preparations to send a modular pumptrack all the way from the Czech Republic to the most remote location a track has ever been sent to. ‘It’s a world first!’

You’ll find Laverton some 950km north-east of Perth via the Great Eastern Highway and Kalgoorlie in the far Northern Goldfields of Western Australia. The history of gold, nickel and the explorers in this region is nothing short of remarkable and prior to the arrival of Europeans the stunning desert area around Laverton had been inhabited by people from the Wangkathaa Aboriginal language group for thousands of years.

Free for all tourists and locals to enjoy, Laverton has officially opened it’s “Quadragon’ Modular Pumptrack offering 47 metres of rideable surface where the perfect geometry and precise engineered modules have created a track that all ages and all abilities can enjoy riding simultaneously with simplicity and lots of fun – all year round.

Shire president Patrick Hill commented “Since it’s been erected the kids haven’t been off it, it’s great, they absolutely love it.

“It was simple to put together, we can add to it and change it whenever we want.

“It’s terrific to see the kids take such interest in it and will be a great asset to the town.”

We love a great story like this. Seeing the biggest smiles on kids faces, the joy that it brings to parents, the successful results it delivers for councils and development groups is what makes our efforts to bring Parkitect Modular Pumptrack’s into Australia so worthwhile.

Happy, healthy Aussies on more wheels more often!

Helping connect families with holiday park cabins for sale

This month we spoke with April Whiston,  2017 Winner of the CARAVANCAMPINGSALES Future Leaders Award. April is taking on new parks, partnering with manufacturers and establishing connections within the industry in a way that has not been done before.

April has been employed as General Manager at their family owned and operated holiday park for four years. Merool on the Murray is a large park with a licence for 494 sites. She is also the sole founder of Cabin Connect.

April shared with us some very clever insights into her Cabin Connect initiative.

Cabin Connect, is essentially an online cabin brokerage service for clients who want to sell their onsite cabin or annual home and for people who are looking to buy the right cabin in the right holiday park – perfectly suited to them.

Launching Cabin Connect after identifying a gap in the market, April is enabling owners of annual or onsite cabins/vans to have a suitable marketing platform to promote their asset when they want to sell and making it easier for people to find a cabin to buy.

Cabin Connect was established as a concept in 2015. Over the past three years, this concept has been tried and tested in the founders own park, Merool on the Murray Holiday Park.

Proving to be a success and a much needed service in the Caravan and Camping – Cabin Industry, now in 2018 Cabin Connect is on the move!

Taking on new parks, partnering with manufacturers and establishing connections within the industry in a way that has not been done before.

Partnering with innovative suppliers in the caravan and camping industry like Parkitect Australia who offer the Modular Pumptrack – bike, scooter, skateboard riding system is helping parks realise their true value when selling their cabin and annual home assets.  People are looking to buy cabins in holiday parks that will cater for their families recreational needs – long term.

April shares “the team at Modular Pumptrack have come on board to help parks achieve exactly that.  Our common passion is for more families to enjoy the outdoors sharing quality time connecting with their family and friends. Modern families are looking for safe, fun holiday parks to buy their cabin investment in.

For many families, buying a cabin, onsite van or annual home in a holiday park is not only more affordable than buying a traditional holiday house, it also offers an enormous amount of additional benefits like recreational facilities, additional camping options for their family and friends and onsite safety.”

“Buying a cabin in a holiday park that offers a swimming pool, jumping pillow, modular pumptrack and a playground guarantees families a fantastic holiday whatever age the kids are and whatever the season is. It just makes good sense to invest in a cabin in a holiday park that offers something safe and fun for everyone. commented Shaun founder and director of Parkitect Australia.

April promotes: Sell your cabin with cabin connect. Buy a Cabin via Cabin Connect. Connect your trade business with potential customers via Cabin Connect. Advertise your related offering via Cabin Connect. It’s all achieved on one platform.

It’s about giving people options – we all want options to help us make good decisions and Cabin Connect offers exactly that.

Congratulations to St Kilda Primary School

The Year 4 students and their teachers have focused on active travel this year and have accomplished an enormous amount.

They have:

-collected data on a weekly basis to gauge how students travel to school and have entered the data into HandsUp, a reporting tool from Bicycle Network. Because of their perseverance we are now a GOLD SCHOOL, the highest possible rating.

-organised our ride/walk/scoot to school day, where they provide a healthy breakfast, organised a ‘dress up your bike’ competitions and invited local member Tim Baxter to join the fun.

-teamed up with Dr Cranky’s bike hospital and to support his initiative they wrote persuasive letters asking for donations from bike shops in the area. Just last week they received a large parcel from 99bikes, containing bikes seats, tubes, bike oil and other goodies.

-worked with Bicycle Network and Port Phillip Council to create 4 Active Travel Paths so that our community can travel more easily to school. The paths will be launched at the start of Term 4.

To celebrate their achievements we invited Bicycle Network to set up their Modular Pumptrack for the Year 4 children next Wednesday for a whole day to improve their bike handling skills, build their confidence and to just have some fun!

From all of us here at Parkitect Australia we say a BIG congratulations to the kids at St Kilda Primary school – we hope you had a fantastic day of fun!

Pumptracks Proving Popular

A great track record: pump tracks proving popular with Australian holiday parks – especially in Victoria!

With wheeled sports being so popular in Victoria, and the state boasting some of the country’s best mountain bike trail regions, the surging interest in pump tracks is not surprising.

For holiday parks, the combination of excitement for kids and relaxation for parents is not exactly a secret recipe – it’s tried and tested for increasing family night stays.

With today’s kids prone to short attention spans and sometimes more devices than hands, satisfying their recreational needs means having park attractions that get them moving, and keep them moving.

Enter the Modular Pumptrack System: Installed above ground, a pumptrack is a curved track with perfectlyformed bumps and turns, that enables anyone on wheels to ride with ease. Pumptracks provide a great riding and skating experience, in an allocated area – which also increases park safety.

So why have Victorian holiday parks jumped on board with such gusto? It’s simple really.

Modular Pumptracks are an ‘all-season’ attraction and for holiday parks across Victoria, this is very important.

The husband-and-wife team behind Parkitect, the Australian distributor of Modular Pumptrack, brought the product to Australia after seeing how well-enjoyed it was in Europe. Parkitect now custom-build tracks for virtually any space and budget.

Parkitect Co-founder Shaun Leicester says parents are driving this trend just as hard – wanting their kids to spend less time on screens and more time socialising and being active.

“The tracks are great for parents – the kids are kept active and safe, and parents can sit back and take a break. It’s a win-win,” says Shaun “For a park attraction, the ‘self installation’ set-up is quite simple and parks are experiencing a fast return on their pumptrack investment” commented Shaun.

Having purchased a Modular Pumptrack in 2017, John Hider-Smith of BIG4 Port Fairy says the track has become an important asset for his park.

“The equipment arrived on the day promised and we were able to install the track in two days, just in time to have it up and running by the Christmas holiday season,” said John.

“Its use by children of all ages is testimony to the popularity of this facility in our park.” Age is proving no limit for the all-season attraction.

The modular design means that rider flow and safety is guaranteed on every track design – whatever the age and skill level.

The Modular Pumptrack System allows people to engage in the play-space together, having fun on bikes, scooters and skateboards, challenging themselves in a controlled environment while having fun with family and friends.

“Our Modular Pumptrack has been an absolute hit with our guests, both young and old. It’s a great asset to our park.” shared Fiona and Adrian, Managers at BIG4 Apollo Bay Pisces Holiday Park.

So far in Victoria, BIG4 Port Fairy, BIG4 Mornington Peninsula, BIG4 Apollo Bay Pisces Holiday Park and Nagambie Lakes Leisure Park have installed Modular Pumptracks, with more deliveries in the pipeline. Whilst seasonal Modular Pumptrack locations across Victoria including Mt Buller and Dinner Plain are helping create an enormous following which is directly feeding into the Victoria holiday park industry.

Additionally, Bicycle Network Victoria actively uses their ‘mobile’ Modular Pumptrack to promote riding at schools and community bike events, driving more and more kids and their parents to search for pumptrack locations.

Why do Aussies love Modular Pumptrack?

We may be slower than Europe to pick up on trends but Aussies are definitely starting to really understand why the European designed pump tracks are super cool to ride.

So we went in search for what is making the pump track such an attractive option for play grounds, play spaces and caravan parks?

The answer was right there in front of us.

Pump tracks are not an intimidating concrete or steel monstrosity, in fact they are not ugly at all.

Pump tracks gently flow around the landscape, tracking between existing big and small trees, around corners, along side playgrounds, inside old tennis courts – they are just so friendly on the environment.

So now we get what Europe has been on about for the last 10+ years but our question of; Why do Aussies specifically love a ‘Modular Pumptrack’ was still unanswered.

Digging much deeper we found that the Modular Pumptrack System built in Europe by Parkitect definitely has significant advantages over traditional dirt or even asphalt pump track build methods.

The Modular Pumptrack patented design and manufacturing methods (both Precast Concrete and Timber Composite) are award winning for really good reasons. On closer inspection, when multiple combinations of the 11 perfectly engineered modules are used to create a pump track, the perfect riding flow is created very easily. And because everyone is having fun on their choice of wheels, like bikes, scooters, skateboards and blades at the same time, it makes for a super happy place for all ages.  A very cool concept.

Based on the amount of public and private money that has been spent on skate parks and traditional pump tracks in the past, it’s clear that if the perfect riding flow is not achieved, the investment will not be enjoyed as intended and therefore can easily result in becoming a problem space.

We now get it too.  When it comes to rider enjoyment and safety, you should only want to invest in a designed track that is proven by thousands upon thousands of riders, from beginner to the most experienced pro-rider and that’s why Parkitect’s Modular Pumptrack System has made such an impact in Australia.

Here in Australia we may be slow to take on Europe’s latest trends but at least now with the global successes of Parkitect’s Modular Pumptrack System we can have the confidence to invest in a proven product that guarantees an awesome riding experience.
